There are a lot of options when it comes to local maps for Carbon County, ranging from the free Montana road maps at the visitors' center in Red Lodge to detailed USGS topo maps and waterproof fishing maps.
The new Carbon County road map has all of the updated road names that were changed as the E911 system was implemented. Everything is up-to-date as of January, 2009.
There's a road index, and color-coding for land ownership (state land in blue, BLM land in yellow, and so forth). It includes mile markers and township numbers to make finding things a snap.
The 1:85,000 scale (one inch is about a mile and a quarter) means that it can cover the whole county without being overly huge and unwieldy.
Although there is some topographical shading, this isn't intended to be a hiking map. It is unabashedly a road map, focused on finding your way around Carbon County.
At $19.95, it isn't cheap. The map isn't mass-produced, which allows MapMurals to keep it up-to-date more easily. It's waterproof, and tear-resistant, so you don't have to replace it if you drop your map in the snow. And, if this sort of thing matters to you, it's produced locally.
